Ingredients

 

Neem

Neem Oil (azadirachta indica)
Also known as "Nimb" in Sanskrit, meaning "one that enhances health". Its antibacterial, antifungal and cleansing properties help heal the cracks on the feet. It is also effective against toe nail infection, athlete’s foot and itching in the feet. Its cooling action also helps to relax the feet and thereby, the entire body. In the villages in India, the twig of the neem tree is often used as a toothbrush to prevent plaque and gingivitis.

 

Shea Butter (butyrospermum parkii)
A natural cream refined from the fruit of the West African ‘Karite’ tree, which grows in the vast wooded Savannah region of Africa. Shea Butter helps to restore and control essential moisture balance, prevents wrinkles caused by dry skin and heals chapped heels.

 

Kokum

Kokum Butter (garcinia indica)
Also known as "Vriksh-amla" in Sanskrit as it bears sour fruit. A neglected and often unheard of ‘gift of nature’, Kokum grows in the hot and humid climate of the Konkan region on the Western coast of India. Kokum butter is the oil extracted from the seeds of the Kokum fruit. It helps to heal the cracks in the feet. It refreshes and revitalizes the feet by removing the tired and dead cells.

 

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus Oil (eucalyptus globulus labill)
Also known as "Tailaparna" in Sanskrit, meaning leaves that contain oil. The active ingredient in eucalyptus is cineole, which acts as a "tension reliever" and soothes painful joints and heals skin lesions. Its deep penetrating property fights infection from bacteria and fungi. It also eliminates odor causing bacteria, increases blood circulation and rejuvenates the skin cells. The Aborigines–native Australians–used the leaves of eucalyptus to help heal wounds and reduce fevers.

 

Arnica

Arnica (arnica montana)
Commonly known as leopard’s bane. It grows in moist sandy soil with adequate drainage and full sun. Extract of the bright yellow blossoms of Arnica contains – Sesquiterpene Lactones – that reduces inflammation and decreases pain along with thymol, inulin, carotenoids, flavoniods and tannins. It soothes skin, it heals bruises and ulcer, cures sprains, relieves arthritic and muscle pain. It has anti bacterial and anti inflammatory qualities that reduce pain and swelling.

 

Wheatgerm

Wheat Germ Oil (triticum vulgare)
It contains Vitamin E which helps to heal the skin and soften it. It clears rashes and heals sores on the feet, relieves itching due to fungal infection or allergy. It also helps to develop new healthy and smooth skin.

Chamomile

Chamomile (chamaemelum nobile)
This word comes from the Greek word 'Chamos' meaning ground and 'Melos' meaning Apple, as the fresh blooms of Chamomile are apple scented. Due to its antibacterial, antifungal and anti allergenic properties, it reduces inflammation and improves blood circulation. It relaxes the muscles and promotes good sleep.

 

Licorice

Licorice (glycyrrhiza glabra)
Known as "Yashtimadhu" in Sanskrit as its root and stem are sweet to taste. In fact, licorice is 50 times sweeter than sugar. It is found in hot and dry climate. The active chemical ingredient is Glycyrrhizic acid, that appears to be responsible for licorice’s anti-inflammatory properties. Its sweet and cooling properties help to heal and dry skin cracks faster. It also induces good sleep, relieves burning in the feet and strengthens the nerves.

Licorice has been known to pharmacists for thousands of years. It is derived from the roots of a plant long treasured by healing cultures across Asia, Europe, and the Mediterranean. In ancient Chinese pharmacy, it was used for its rejuvenating properties. It was used to quench thirst, alleviate muscular and joint pain, cough and distress of breathing. Licorice plays an important part in Ayurvedic medicine and is one of the principal drugs mentioned by Susruta (a scholar of Ayurveda who lived over 3000 years ago).

 

Lemon (citrus limon)
Lemon comes from the Persian word 'Limu', which in turn comes from the Sanskrit word "Nimbuka". Although lemons have been used for centuries as a miracle cure for scurvy, it was more recently discovered that they also contain powerful anti-oxidants that slow the aging process. It contains citric acid which acts as an antiseptic, removes the dead cells from the skin, cleanses the pores and makes the skin on the feet smooth and soft.

Cucumber

Cucumber (cucumis sativus)
Known as "Trapush" in Sanskrit. It contains 96 % water (which gives it a super coolant action), protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, vitamin B, and other trace minerals. It softens and hydrates the skin and restores its freshness and texture. It also helps relieve burning in the feet because of its extreme cooling action.

 

Algae
They are photosynthetic organisms. They are neither plant, animal nor fungi. Algae are excellent sources of protein, vitamins, minerals, trace elements and enzymes. It is an active substance that nourishes skin cells, normalizes the skin’s moisture content, prevents excessive dryness leading to cracks and bleeding and provides suppleness to the epidermis. It is used to add vital oligo elements and increase surface hydration. Algae oxygenate the skin to facilitate toxic elimination. They also help to remove dark patches on the feet due to shoe marks and protect the skin as well. Marine algae energize skin cells – increasing blood flow to the skin's surface, opening pores and drawing out toxins.

 

Yeast
Yeast is a unicellular fungi that is 50% protein and a rich source of vitamin B, niacin and folic acid. Hence it strengthens the skin of the feet against continuous wear and tear and helps repair the damaged tissue faster.

 

Mugwort

Mugwort (artemisia vulgaris)
Commonly known as St. John’s plant. Two of the interesting folk lores attached to it are:

  • The English name "mugwort” is derived from the fact that the flowers were placed in mugs to flavor drinks and used with ground ivy in the fermentation of ale in the olden times.


  • It is believed that Saint John the Baptist wore a girdle made of mugwort in the wilderness to protect himself from diseases and misfortunes like fatigue, sunstroke, evil spirits and wild beasts.

Since mugwort was used both in cookery and in medicine, it was commonly planted in the gardens of the colonial Germans.

The parts commonly used are roots and leaves. The plant is found in abundance in hedgebanks and waysides. It helps to improve blood circulation and its stimulating properties act as a tonic for the skin. Mugwort is an excellent herb to cleanse smelly feet. Mugwort calms irritated skin and helps decrease redness, for example, after wearing shoes with narrow toes and high heels.

Glucosamine
It is an amino sugar compound produced by the body that helps cushion joints, relieve pain and reduce inflammation. We all have a certain amount of glucosamine in our bodies but as we grow older the body loses its capacity to make enough glucosamine leading to bone tissue damage, inflammation and pain. Aloe

Aloe Vera (aloe barbadensis)
Also known as "Kumari" (female) in Sanskrit, this ingredient has often been used to treat "female" problems. Derived from the Latin word "Vera" which means ‘true’, this species of Aloe was considered to have the best medicinal properties dating back more than 2500 years. Its natural analgesic and anti inflammatory properties reduce swelling and help soothe the skin. It stimulates the turnover of collagen in the skin, facilitating faster healing.
 

Almond

Almond Oil (prunus dulcis)
Commonly known as Sweet Almond and derived from the old English word "Almande", this oil has a light odor and a nutty taste due to the presence of Oleum Amygdalae. It is an excellent natural moisturizer for the foot and is easily absorbed into the skin, making it non-greasy. It also protects the skin’s surface, acts as an emollient, skin soother and softener. It is very effective for dry and cracked feet, especially the heels, due to its hydrating properties.

 

Castor Oil (ricinus communis linn)
Also known as "Aerand" in Sanskrit, meaning one that pacifies the nerves and removes stiffness from the body. Castor oil is an excellent remedy for dry and coarse skin. It reduces irritation of the skin and alleviates swelling. Its hot and penetrating properties are also effective against foot pain, especially due to unsuitable footwear, excessive standing, walking, running and high impact aerobic activities. During the middle ages, the castor oil plant was christened the "Palma Christi" or the palm of Christ, perhaps for its miraculous healing powers. Castor Oil was often quoted in the readings of Edgar Cayce as a remedy for various ailments from removing warts and softening hardened toes to breaking abdominal lesions.
